Jess Hooper writes songs for people who have lived a little, lost a little, laughed at the wrong moments, and are still figuring out what the hell they’re doing. She’s blending alt-country and folk with a little bit of grit and attitude thrown in.
Love, loss, regret, resilience and the strange business of being a person all make their way into Jess’s writing. Her songs are personal without being precious - stories about relationships, mistakes, growing older, starting over and the things we carry with us, whether we meant to or not. There’s vulnerability in them, but rarely without a little self-awareness or a sideways glance.
Her influences span the storytelling of artists like Patty Griffin and Mary Chapin Carpenter through to the country edge of Miranda Lambert and the emotional honesty of Kasey Chambers. The result is music that feels familiar without being predictable - songs that can say something meaningful without taking themselves too seriously.
After stepping away from performing while life, work and family took centre stage, Jess has returned to music with a renewed sense of purpose. Here she is with a clearer idea of what she wants to say, a growing collection of songs that were clearly not going to leave her alone and considerably less interest in pretending to have all the answers.
She is currently working towards the release of her debut album, with new original music beginning to make its way into the world.
There’s no grand reinvention here. Just honest songs, a little grit, a bit of humour, and a songwriter still figuring some things out - much like the rest of us.
